| US representative and mayor, born in Kladno, Bohemia. He went to the USA as an infant, began his working life as a coal miner, and rose to become a prosperous businessman. A power in Chicago Democratic politics, he served four terms as a state legislator (from 1903), as well as holding other state and city offices. Elected Mayor of Chicago (1931), he was killed in 1933 by a gunman aiming at president-elect Franklin Roosevelt as they were riding together in a car in Miami, FL. |
