| biography:
| Dancer and choreographer, born in Slinfold, West Sussex, S England, UK. He was a principal with Diaghilev's Ballets Russes from 1924, and a principal with the Vic–Wells Ballet during the 1930s. He co-founded the Markova–Dolin Ballet, which became known particularly for its interpretations of Giselle. In 1950 he founded the Festival Ballet and remained its first artistic director, choreographing for the company, until 1961. He was knighted in 1981. |
