| biography:
| Seleucid king of Syria, the son of Seleucus II and grandson of Antiochus II, who succeeded his brother, Seleucus III, in 223 BC. He waged war with success against Ptolemy IV Philopator, and though defeated at Raphia near Gaza (217 BC), he obtained entire possession of Palestine and Coele Syria (198 BC). He later became involved in war with the Romans, who had conquered Macedonia. He crossed over into Greece, but was defeated in 191 BC at Thermopylae, and in 190 or 189 BC by Scipio at Magnesia. To raise tribute money, he attacked a rich temple in Elymais, but the people rose against him and killed him. |
