| Innovative Roman general of the Second Punic War, whose victory at Ilipa (206 BC) forced the Carthaginians out of Spain, and whose defeat of Hannibal at Zama (202 BC) broke the power of Carthage altogether. Honoured for this with the title Africanus, he remained in the forefront of affairs until forced into retirement by his political enemies of the 180s. |
