| biography:
| Writer, born in Munich, SE Germany. She had a French mother and devoted much of her own life to promoting peace between Germany and France. She moved to Paris (1933–40), went to the USA (1940–5), and then returned to Europe. Much of her writing is autobiographical, dealing with imagination and sensitivity in her female characters, but also focusing on contemporary issues. Other works include historical non-fiction and biographies, including Mozart (1937) and Franz Schubert (1941). She also translated Briefe der Catarina von Sienna (1906). |
