| biography:
| Painter, born in Montargis, C France. He studied under David (1785) and was awarded the Prix de Rome (1789) with Joseph Recognized by his Brother (École des Beaux-Arts, Paris). He was a versatile artist in a period of great stylistic change, who painted in a Neoclassical manner but who could also adopt a Mannerist approach to painting. He is regarded as the link between Neoclassicism and Romanticism, and his works include Mlle Lange as Danaë (1799) and The Apotheosis of the French Heroes (1801). He abandoned painting in 1812 after inheriting a small fortune. |
