| Educationist, born in Liverpool, Merseyside, NW England, UK, the sister of Arthur Hugh Clough. A vigorous proponent of higher education for women, she secured the admission of women to Manchester and Newcastle colleges. In 1871 she became the first principal of the first hall for women students at Cambridge: Newnham Hall, later called Newnham College. |
