| biography:
| Byzantine princess and historian, the daughter of the Emperor Alexius I Comnenus. In 1097 she married Nicephorus Bryennius, for whom she tried in vain to gain the imperial crown after her father's death in 1118. She took up literature, and after her husband's death (1137) retired to a convent where she wrote the Alexiad, a notable account in 15 books of Byzantine history and society for the period 1069–1118. |
