| biography:
| Novelist, born in Rotterdam, W Netherlands. She is considered one of the writers who changed the nature of Dutch post-war literature. Her second novel, Eenzaam avontuur (1948, Lonely Adventure), caused a public stir because of an unconcealed description of lesbian love and her pessimistic, existentialist outlook on modern society. Set in a petty bourgeois, typically Dutch environment, the novel bears a resemblance to De Avonden, in that it can be typified as a forerunner of Modernism in Dutch literature. Her novel Op leven en dood (1954, A Matter of Life and Death) is generally seen as one of the highlights of her literary career. In 1956 she was awarded the prestigious P C Hooft-prijs for her entire work. |
