| Jazz vocalist, born in Chicago, Illinois, USA. She sang with the Max Miller combo (1939) and the Gene Krupa band (1941–3), with whom she had several hit records including ‘Just A Little Bit South Of North Carolina’ and ‘Georgia On My Mind’. She also worked with Duke Ellington and Benny Goodman, and appeared in the films The Gene Krupa Story (1959) and Jazz on a Summer's Day (1960). She had another hit with ‘Tennessee Waltz’ (1951), and recorded several albums, include Sings Jazz (1952) and Live at the City (1979). |
