| biography:
| Portuguese politician and prime minister (1985–95), born in Loulé, S Portugal. He studied economics in Britain and the USA, became a university teacher, and then a research director in the Bank of Portugal. With the re-establishment of constitutional government after 1976, he entered politics and became minister of finance (1980–1), and in 1985 leader of the Social Democratic Party and prime minister. Under his leadership Portugal joined the European Community in 1985 and the Western European Union in 1988. |
