| German politician, born in Hamburg, N Germany. Trained as a physicist, he worked at the Akademie der Wissenschaft E Berlin. He joined the Christlich-Demokratische Union (CDU), co-founded the Demokratischer Aufbruch (1989), and was member of its Vorstand. He served as a member of the Bundesrat (from 1990) and Bundesministerin für Frauen und Jugend (1991–8), and was deputy CDU chairperson (from 1991). |
