| biography:
| Adventurer and pilot, born in Springfield, Missouri, USA. He joined the Canadian Air Corps at age 16 and during World War 1 was shot down over France. He became a soldier of fortune and served in China and South America, as well as working in Hollywood as a stuntman. In 1935, seeking a gold mine on Mount Auyantepui, a plateau in SE Venezuela, he flew over the highest waterfall in the world (980 m/3215 ft). As the first white person to discover it, the Western world named it Angel Falls. He died in Balboa, Panama Canal Zone, after a stroke suffered during a minor plane accident. |
