| biography:
| Geophysicist, born in Volosko, W Croatia. He studied at Prague University, and became professor at the Zagreb Technical School in 1891, and later at Zagreb University. In 1909, when studying the seismographic records of the earthquake in the Kulpa Valley, he noted that some waves arrived earlier than others and reasoned that they had travelled through two different layers of the Earth. He deduced that the Earth's crust must overlay a denser mantle, and calculated the depth of this transition (the Mohorovičić, or Moho, discontinuity) to be about 30 km. The depth of the Moho has now been extensively mapped using reflection seismic techniques. |
