| biography:
| Afrikaner leader, born in Graaff-Reinet, S South Africa (then Cape Colony). A prosperous farmer, he joined the Great Trek of 1836 into Natal, where he was chosen commandant-general. He later accepted British rule, but after differences with the governor he trekked again, this time across the Vaal. Eventually the British recognized the Transvaal Republic, later the South African Republic, whose new capital was named Pretoria after him. |
