| biography:
| Film-maker, born in Moscow, Russia. He studied at the State Film School, and directed the short film Segodnya Otpuska Nye Budyet (1959, There Will Be No Leave Today). His work gained him critical recognition as one of the cinema's true poets. He examined youth in Ivanovo Detstvo (1962, Ivan's Childhood), and offered bleak visions of the future in Solaris (1972) and Stalker (1979). Exiled in Paris, his final film, Offret (1986, The Sacrifice), was characteristic of his concern for the future and his advocacy of peace. |
