| biography:
| Painter, born in Russia. Little is known about his life or works, but he is generally regarded as the greatest of Russian icon painters. He became a monk and was an assistant to the Greek painter Theothanes, with whom he worked in Moscow from 1405. He painted icons in the Cathedral of the Annunciation in the Kremlin, Moscow, and also murals, such as in the Cathedral of the Dormition at Vladimir and at Moscow. In 1422 he returned to Troitsky-Sergieva, where he is traditionally believed to have produced his most famous work, the icon of the Old Testament Trinity, represented by three graceful angels. |
