| biography:
| Singer and actress, born in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, SE England, UK. Radio and stage successes led to her selection for the New York City production of The Boyfriend (1954), and several long-running Broadway musicals, notably My Fair Lady (1956) and Camelot (1960). With her film debut in Mary Poppins (1964) she won an Oscar, and this was followed by a further nomination for The Sound of Music (1965). Voted the world's most popular star, she broadened her range in S.O.B. (1981), Victor/Victoria (1982), Duet for One (1987), and A Fine Romance (1992). Later films include Relative Values (2000) and Princess Diaries (2001). Since 1970 she has appeared almost exclusively in films directed by her second husband, Blake Edwards. In 1998 an operation on her vocal cords left her singing voice badly damaged. She became a dame in 1999. |
