| Biblical scholar and Unitarian theologian, born in Hingham, Massachusetts, USA. He studied at Harvard (1804), held a pastorate in Maine for a time, and returned to Harvard as a tutor (1813). He was professor of divinity at Harvard (1819–30) after which he was an independent scholar. His Evidences of the Genuineness of the Gospels (3 vols, 1837–44) was one of the earliest critical studies of the Bible published in America. |
