| Novelist, critic, and biographer, born in Stone, Staffordshire, C England, UK. He acquired a certain notoriety for his book reviews while literary editor of The Spectator (1981–3), and became known for his uncompromising High Church conservatism. His first novel was The Sweets of Pimlico (1977), later books including Wise Virgin (1982), Daughters of Albion (1991), and A Watch In The Night (1996). His literary criticism is collected in Penfriends from Porlock (1988), and his biographies include works on Scott, Milton, and Tolstoy (1988, Whitbread). Later works include God's Funeral (1999), his account of the decline of orthodox Christianity in Victorian Britain. |
