| Mathematician, born in Fresno, California, USA. A specialist in topological groups and Banach algebras, he was a Harvard professor of mathematics and natural philosophy (1969). A National Academy of Sciences member, he was the recipient of the Cleveland Prize (1952) and president of the American Mathematical Society (1962–3). |
