| biography:
| US naval officer, born in New Haven, Connecticut, USA. He entered the navy in 1822, and was promoted captain in 1849. In 1856 he stormed four Chinese forts at Canton, which had fired on him. In the Civil War he organized the western flotilla, and in February 1862 stormed Fort Henry. Shortly afterwards he was wounded, and was forced to resign as rear admiral. |
