| biography:
| Composer and conductor, born in Montluçon, C France. He was artistic director of Covent Garden Theatre, London (1901–7), and director of Opéra Comique, Paris (1898–1903, 1919–20). His operettas were popular in England as well as France, and include La Bearnaise (1885), Madame Chrysanthème (1893), and Monsieur Beaucaire (1919). He also wrote piano pieces and several ballets, notably Les Deux pigeons (1886, The Two Pigeons). |
