| French general of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, born in Nice, SE France. He distinguished himself in Napoleon's Italian campaign (1796–7), defeating the Russians at Zürich (1799), and successfully defending Genoa (1800). He was created a marshal of the empire in 1804, took command of the army in Italy, and after further successes was made Duke of Rivoli (1807). After the Austrian campaign (1809) he was made Prince of Essling. However, forced to retreat in the Iberian Peninsula by Wellington's forces, he was relieved of his command (1810). |
