| Mathematician and physicist, born in Lyon, SC France. He taught at the Ecole Polytechnique in Paris, the University of Paris, and the Collège de France. He laid the foundations of the science of electrodynamics following Ørsted's discovery in 1820 of the magnetic effects of electric currents. His name was given to the basic SI unit of electric current (ampere, amp). |
