| Composer, born in Paris, France. Gifted in all the arts, he began composing from the age of 13 and wrote a ballet at age 15. He studied with Le Flem, who introduced him to Varese, whose influence is evident in his string quartet (1934). He founded ‘Jeune France’ with Baudrier, Daniel-Lesur, and Messiaen, and became musical director of such great institutions as la Comédie Française (1943– 59) and the festival of Aix-en-Provence (1959). In 1966–70 he was professor at the Conservatoire. He composed for the stage, produced ballet music, melodies, and orchestral pieces (3 symphonies 1953, 1959, 1964), and wrote ‘Messe pour le Jour de la Paix’ for tambourine. He was influenced by Bartok, to whom he dedicated his first sonata for piano in 1945. |
