| Statesman and novelist, born in Paris, France. He studied oriental languages and spent much time in China, where he worked for the Guomindang and was active in the 1927 revolution. He also fought in the Spanish Civil War, and in World War 2 escaped from a prison camp to join the French resistance. He was minister of information in de Gaulle's government (1945–6), and minister of cultural affairs (1960–9). He is known for his novels, notably La Condition humaine (1933, trans Man's Fate; Prix Goncourt) and L'Espoir (1937, trans Man's Hope). |
