| biography:
| Violinist and composer of Italian origin, born in Aix-en-Provence, SE France. Director of music at several cathedrals, he was summoned to Paris, to the Sainte-Chapelle de Notre-Dame (1694–1700), but was drawn to the theatre, at first secretly - ‘Quand notre Archevesque scaura / L'auteur du Nouvel Opéra / De sa Cathédrale Campra / Décampera...’. From 1700 he composed, with rich orchestral colours, entertainments for the nobility. Appointed inspector of the Academie Royale de Musique in 1730, his health deteriorated and he died impoverished. He produced opera-ballets, at times parodic, and motets from his earlier period containing popular themes. |
