biography: Novelist, born in Metz, NE France. The son of Polish Jews who had moved to France in 1924, in 1941 his parents were deported and killed by the Nazis. He taught himself French and joined the resistance movement. His powerful book Le Dernier des Justes (1959) examines the European persecution of Jews and genocide. With his wife Simone he has published a series of novels dealing with racism, beginning with Un plat de porc aux bananes vertes (1966).
