| Nicaraguan dictator, born in San Marcos, W Nicaragua. He studied in the USA. As chief of the National Guard, he established himself in supreme power in the early 1930s, and retained power until assassinated. His sons Luis Somoza Debayle (1923–67) and Anastasio Somoza Debayle (1925–80) continued dynastic control of Nicaragua until the 1979 revolution. |
