biography: Politician, born in Sanain, N Armenia, the brother of Artem Ivanovich Mikoyan. He studied theology, then joined the Bolsheviks in 1915. A member of the Central Committee in 1922, he supported Stalin against Trotsky, and in 1926 became minister of trade, doing much to improve Soviet standards of living, and introducing several ideas from the West. He was vice-chairman of the Council of Ministers (1955–64), and President of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet (1964–5).
