| biography:
| Antipope (1130–8), born in Rome, Italy. He was first a monk at Cluny, then a cardinal from 1116, and apostolic delegate in France and England. He was elected pope by the majority of the cardinals in opposition to Innocent II. Anacleto was supported by the Roman aristocracy, including Ruggero d'Altavilla, whom he crowned King of Sicily, but Innocent received the emperor's recognition. The schism ended after his death when his successor, Victor IV (Gregory Conti), withdrew. |
