| Arab soldier. A convert to Islam, he joined the Prophet Mohammed in c.629, and took part in the conquest of Palestine in 638. In 639 he undertook the conquest of Egypt, becoming its first Muslim governor (642–44). He helped Muawiyah to seize the caliphate from Ali. |
