| biography:
| Novelist and poet, born in Santander, N Spain. He produced an impressive historical novel under his pseudonym, Ave Maris Stella (1877), subtitled historia montañesa del siglo XVII, whose only weakness is the relative scarcity of action. His work generally creates expert period atmosphere and wholly convincing characters. His more conventional verses in Poesías (1907) are best when concentrating on the sea and mountains near Santander. Among his travel books are Del Manzanares al Darro (1863), Del Ebro al Tíber (1864), Costas y montañas (1871), and En la playa (1873). |
