| Lebanese statesman and president (1982–8). Trained as a lawyer, he supported his brother, Bashir Gemayel, in the 1975–6 civil war, and was his successor to the presidency when Bashir was assassinated. Politically more moderate, his policies intially proved no more successful in determining a peaceful settlement of the problems of Lebanese government. |
