| Food scientist, born in Austria-Hungary. He went to the USA and joined the University of Maryland (1934), where he gained his PhD (1942). He worked at the National Canners Association developing an objective method for measuring food quality (1941–4) and then for the National Research Council to revise nutrient tables (USDA Handbook No 8) before returning to teach at the University of Maryland (1948–80). He co-wrote Quality Control for the Food Industry (1970, 1973). He died unexpectedly during a game of tennis. |
