| Duke of Aosta and soldier, born in Turin, Piedmont, NW Italy, the son of Emanuele Filiberto and Elena of France. He helped put down the guerrilla fighting for Libya's independence (1925–31) and was viceroy to Ethiopia from 1937. Under siege from British troops at Amba Alagi, he was forced to surrender in 1941 and died in detention. |
