| biography:
| Franciscan poet of the Court of Ferdinand and Isabella, born in Huerte, Cuenca, EC Spain. He translated the Vita Christi of Ludolphus of Saxony (4 vols, 1502), probably from the Catalan of Joan Ruiz de Corella (1500). His own poetry is impregnated with the simple piety and exquisite sensibility of St Francis and Jacopone da Todi in the popular themes expressed in popular metres of the Cancionero... (1508). The coplas, romances, hymns, and villancicos render rustic motifs most affectingly a lo divino. His Coplas sobre diversas devociones y Misterios de nuestra Santa Fe Católica has been edited by H Thomas in facsimile (London, 1936). He also wrote Epístolas y Evangelios por todo el año (1512). |
