| biography:
| Poet and critic, born in Sète, S France. He settled in Paris in 1892, and after writing a great deal of poetry relapsed into a 20 years' silence, taken up with mathematics and philosophical speculations, later published as Cahiers (29 vols, 1957–60). He emerged in 1917 with a new Symbolist poetic outlook and technique in La Jeune Parque (1917, The Young Fate) and Les Charmes (1922). One of his aphorisms was: ‘A poem is never finished, only abandoned’ - an axiom which applies also to encyclopedias. |
