| biography:
| Italian patriot, born in Milan, Lombardy, N Italy. In 1851 he was arrested by the Austrian police for putting up revolutionary placards in his home town of Milan and sentenced to death. Hoping to extract from him the names of the others involved, according to tradition, the police took him past his house on the way to the gallows. To their blandishments he famously replied in Milanese dialect ‘Tiremm innanz’ (‘let's move on’). |
