| biography:
| Byzantine emperor (1341–91), the son of Andronicus III and Anna of Savoy. He succeeded to the throne at age nine, and was crowned co-emperor with John Cantacuzenus, chief minister under Andronicus. Despite John V's marriage to Helen, daughter of Cantacuzenus, he allied with the Venetians against Cantacuzenus and forced him to abdicate (1354). When the Ottoman Turks occupied Gallipoli and threatened Constantinople, John V appealed to the West for help and was aided by Amadeus VI. Wars with the Serbs and Turks continued, and in 1371 he was forced to recognize the suzerainty of the Turks when they gained most of Macedonia. After he was deposed and imprisoned (1376) by his son, the Turks helped him regain the throne (1379), but at his death he left his heir, Manuel, an empire greatly reduced in size and strength. |
