| Novelist, short-story writer, and playwright, born in Pontypridd, Rhondda Cynon Taff, S Wales, UK. He studied at University College, Swansea, and worked as a probation officer, sailor, and teacher. His novels include The Elephant You Gave Me (1963), A Woman of Experience (1969), and Barque Whisper (1979). He has also published two collections of short stories, Dai Country (1973) and The Former Miss Merthyr Tydfil (1976). He is well known for his adaptation for television of The Onedin Line. His autobiography, Days of Absence, appeared in 1986. |
