biography: Painter and architect, the founder of the Florentine School of painting, born in the village of Vespignano, near Florence, NC Italy. His major work was the fresco cycle, ‘The Lives of Christ and the Virgin’, in the Arena Chapel, Padua (1305–8). In 1330–3 he was employed by King Robert in Naples, and in 1334 was appointed Master of Works of the cathedral and city of Florence, where amongst other works he designed the Campanile. The fresco cycle on the life of St Francis in the Basilica of St Francis in Assisi is also attributed to him; it was severely damaged in an earthquake in 1997.
