| biography:
| French soldier, born in Bône, NE Algeria. He trained at St Cyr Military Academy, served with the Moroccan forces during World War 1, and became chief-of-staff in North Africa (1938). He was captured by the Germans (1940), released in 1941, and became military governor of Morocco under the Vichy government. After the Allied invasion of Tunisia, he changed sides, and distinguished himself in the subsequent Italian campaign. He became chief-of-staff of the National Defence Committee in Liberated France (1944–7), and was resident-general in Morocco (1947–51). He was promoted field-marshal in 1952, broke with de Gaulle in 1960 over the Algerian policy, and retired. |
