| biography:
| Poet, statesman, and historian, born in Mâcon, EC France. His best-known work was his first volume of lyrical poems, Méditations poétiques (1820, Poetic Meditations). He became a diplomat at Naples and Florence, a member of the provisional government in the 1848 revolution, and acted as minister of foreign affairs, finally devoting himself to literature. Among his later works are the Histoire des Girondins (1847, 8 vols, History of the Girondists), and histories of the French restoration, the 1848 Revolution, and other events of his lifetime. |
