| Painter and designer, born in Ivancice, Moravia, S Czech Republic. He worked in Paris (1889–1904) where he became famous as one of the leading exponents of Art Nouveau, designing posters (especially those made in Paris in the 1890s for the actress Sarah Bernhardt), furniture, jewellery, book illustrations, and stained glass. Although he returned to his native country in 1910, he maintained close links with Paris. |
