| biography:
| Playwright, born in Sevilla, SW Spain. He was for some time an actor in the company of Lope de Rueda. Joan de Timoneda published Vega's three prose plays: Las tres famosísimas comedias del ilustre poeta y gracioso representante Alonso de la Vega (Valencia, 1566). The Comedia Tholomea is a thin play on the resemblance between two men, both called Tolomeo. The Tragedia Serafina is an unsuccessful compound of pastoral and mythological elements marred by inept comic insertions. His best extant work is the Comedia de la duquesa de la rosa, inspired by Bandello's story Amore di Don Giovanni di Mendozza e della Duchessa di Savoja and the seventh patraña of Timoneda. |
