| biography:
| Playwright and hagiographer, born in Toledo, C Spain. He was chaplain of the Toledan mozárabes. He is famous for the anonymous 5-act Comedia llamada Selvagia (Toledo, 1554) reprinted in the Colección de Libros Raros y Curiosos (1873). Apart from Lope de Vega's Dorotea, the Selvagia is the best imitation of the Celestina and the author, whose name is proved by an acrostic, was affectionately called ‘Villegas Selvago’ after his hero. A prolific hagiographer, Villegas compiled a 5-volume Flos sanctorum (Toledo, 1580–1603) and individual lives of a number of saints: Vida de San Isidro Labrado (1592) and Vida de San Tirso (Toledo, 1595) among others. His Vitoria o Triunfo de Iesu Cristo (1600) is only one of many pious books popular in their day. |
