| biography:
| Ascetic writer, born in Oropesa, Spain. He became an Augustinian in 1522 and spent the next 20 years administering a number of Augustinian communities. He claimed that when he was living in Sevilla in 1542, the Virgin Mary addressed him in a dream with the single word ‘write’, and from then he never ceased to publish works of asceticism and mysticism which were eagerly read and quoted all over Spain: Consideraciones acerca de los nombres de Cristo (1544), Examen de conciencia (1551), Las siete palabras que la Virgen Sacratísima Nuestra Señora habló (1556), Victoria del mundo (1566), Epistolario cristiano para todos los estados (1567), Libro de la suavidad de Dios (1576), Victoria de la muerte (1583), Arte de amar a Dios y al prójimo (1585), Guarda de la lengua (1589), and Las confesiones del pecador fray Alonso de Orozco (1601), among others. Compilations of his writings were made in the mid-16th-c with the Recopilación de todas las obras (1554–5). He was beatified by Pope Leo XIII in 1882. |
