| Painter and sculptor, born near Valladolid, NWC Spain, the son of Pedro Berruguete. He became the major Spanish sculptor of the 16th-c, and an important figure in the introduction of the Italian Mannerist style into Spain. He was appointed court painter to Charles V, and later ennobled. He is best known for the wood and alabaster carvings for the choir of Toledo Cathedral. |
